Gift Etiquette 101—How to Accept Graciously.

Since our 2009 treasure chest palette is sold out at Sephora, we’ve decided to run a contest on our Facebook page for a chance to win this gem of a palette. That said our fans are leaving comments that have me rolling on the floor laughing. Why, you ask? Well, to enter you must share the worst gift you’ve ever received & in return we’ll give one of you a gift you want! From hot dog pokers to a wheel of baby Gouda cheese, this really got me thinking. How do you react to such silly and ridiculous presents? How do you hold-up a true poker face while un-wrapping a terrible gift?!

When accepting a gift it’s always important to remain thankful. In this awkward moment try your best to uphold your manners—no glimpse of shock or horror. Stay classy. After asking around for some tips from some true masters of animated appreciation I have narrowed it down to 3 easy steps:

Step 1: Know your audience. Show your appreciation and make it look real, even if you feel your taste is way better.

Step 2: The wrong expression can hurt the feelings of the giver. Although you can’t seem to come to any conclusion as to why they bought this for you, give them the benefit of the doubt (they bought this picturing your excitement). So be just that, surprised and excited.

Step 3: Always smile & always say thank you. Even ask where they got such a “unique & thoughtful” gift (in your head you can picture yourself at the return counter).

Now, I know these may be easier said than done. Just remember, it’s the season of generosity—it can always be worse.

Gift Guide--Gifts that Give Back!

This holiday season make a change—gift beyond your family & friends. Look for products that donate a portion (or all) of proceeds to a worthy cause. I’m trying to make a conscious effort to choose items that help make it merry for everyone! What’s that saying again? Oh yes, “Tis better to give than receive.” Here are some ideas to get you started!

- The FEED 3 Bear is made from 100% plush organic cotton and natural burlap. This snuggle buddy is perfect for your little one and like all FEED products—it’s their goal to sell as many FEED 3 bears as possible to FEED and educate the world's 400 million hungry children. "Nut," the FEED 3 bear, will provide Plumpy'Nut® for 3 children through Industrial Revelation.
- tarte’s t5™ super fruit complex is found in many products including our cult fave, natural cheek stain. With the purchase of any tarte product containing t5™, tarte will donate proceeds to the Sustainable Amazon Partnership (SAP)—helping to preserve the Amazon Rainforest through forest stewardship, improved living conditions and educational opportunities for communities in Brazil.
- The Retro Green Scooter is a sleek ride for any 3-to-5 year old & proceeds from every purchase are donated to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital.
- For the stylista, the ‘Nana’ ring from H.E.L.P’s Panthera Collection is a generous gift that benefits nutritional education in Malawi.
- My personal favorite is from Heart U Back. Their cord adjustable bracelet (think very Links of London) comes in a ton of colors (I picked up red) and mixes in perfect with the rest of your stackables. The best part, Heart U Back promises $125,000 in proceeds to the ASPCA.

Gift Guide--For Him!

Whether it’s your father, brother, son, husband or boyfriend, it’s always tough to get that special guy in your life the perfect gift. Most men just don’t light-up in surprise over another new tie, set of cufflinks or sweater the same way us ladies go ga-ga over jewelry, bags & makeup. That being said I’ve tried my very best to bring you a few great gifts for all those guys in your life. I guarantee that he’ll love you even more for them!

1. This is not another button-down. It’s a tailored ‘washed-favorites’ from J-crew. I say if he has to wear one everyday it might as well feel like his favorite tee.
2. From skate shops and Barney’s New York to the pages of Nylon Men, Men’s Journal & GQ, Nixon men’s watches are a must-have! Pick up the Chrono 51-30 (see above) or the rotolog (he’ll thank you for it).
3. John Varvatos Vintage cologne—simply put, he’ll smell amazing!
4. You can’t go wrong with tickets to see his favorite team or band!
5. Nothing beats the sound of his ipod on a BOSE dock. If you’re feeling extra nice, then snag him a pair of high-def headphones, too.

Sock it to Me!

Something happened to me during a mid-winter jaunt to the West Coast earlier this year…something strange and unexpected that I couldn’t have seen coming for a million style miles. Don’t worry, tartelettes, I’m just talking about socks. “Socks?” you ask. Yep, I fell head over heels-literally-for these foot fashions. I was at the Juicy Couture store on the crazy-chic Colorado Blvd, and on a whim, picked up a pair of knee-high JC socks. They were inexpensive, full of cute Juicy scribbles and just plain fun! I rocked them over black leggings with Cali-girl chicness on the plane back home.

Well, that one moment turned me- the girl who has stolen socks from every roommate she’s ever had- to a certified sock seeker. My Juicy collection is nearing double digits, and this season’s mags and catalogs are forcing my eyes…and toes towards other brands and style. I can’t wait to try J.Crew’s bobby variety or Urban Outfitter’s over the knee stripes. And Free People’s lace thigh-highs? Well, we all know how Mimi feels about the lacy stuff.

If you’re worried about looking like a “Three’s Company” reject, just follow Mimi’s tips for a successfully stylish sock-hop.
•Tube Toss—Unless they have “Juicylicious,” “From Juicy with Love” or any other cheeky Pam&Gela saying , leave the high-white tube variety in the gym.
•Grown-Girl-Chic— Though the whole knee-socks trend is a riff on the classic catholic schoolgirl look, no need to look like a GossipGeek. Strut your sock-style with the panache and confidence of someone with a past tense relationship with high school.
•Dare to Bear— Don’t go to all the trouble of buying adorable socks just to hide them under boots or pants. Show off those quirky Juicy-isms; sweet, but sassy bow details; and sparkling sequin embellishments! Unsure how to stage a sock show? The J.Crew catalog offers some awesome inspiration!

All right, tartelettes, cover those tootsies in something chic and get a-hoppin’!

Daytime Dare: Velveeta

November is upon us, Tartelettes, and we all know what that means- Wham, Bam, its Christmas, ma’am! What better suits the Holiday Season than the sumptuous richness of velvet? Ok, ok, so I understand your fears with this fabric. But I blame that fashion trepidation on two other style offenders. They go by the names of crushed and velour.

No worries, darlings, Mimi is the blogger who will save chic Christmas…or Hanukkah or Kwanzaa. (I’m très P.C.) Well, I’m playing Not-So-Secret Santa and giving you all you need to don truly gay apparel this Jingle Bell season.

1. You are Ebenezer Scrooge if this Isaac Mizrahi
Two-Tone Velvet pump does not make you absolutely giddy. That eggplant on crimson is sartorially sinful.
2. I love
Corpus’ Velvet Moto jacket because it puts a casual edge on this typically evening fabric. VroomVroomVelvet!
3. A.Wang has done it again with this perfect tough/soft-chic
Velvet&Leather jacket
4. This
Foley+Corinna Velvet Trim vest is the supreme style for the Tartelette just dabbling in the fabric. I’d amp up the sexy factor with sizzling liquid leggings.
5. Joie
Velvet leggings
6. Nothing combats velvet’s “Old Granny” rep like this
Free People micro-mini with its funky paisley print!
7.
Gryphon Velvet Smoking Jacket
8. The patent and velvet on these Silver Way
Oxfords is the best unexpected combo since Chrismukkah.
9. Who better to up the chic ante of the dreaded velvet headband than Mr. Jacobs? This Marc by Marc Jacobs
Velvet Bow Headband is the perfect quirky touch to traditional Holiday fashions.
10. BCBG Max Azria
Velvet Romper

Ok, Tartelettes, no more velvet vexing! It’s time for you to deck the halls with boughs of chicness ;)

Chain Gang

If you’re a child of the ‘90s like me, the words “chain necklace” can induce some pretty awful images. For instance, the chunky herringbone chain that accompanied hideous then, hilarious now color-block ‘fits. My personal fave was my turquoise, hot pink and purple windbreaker suit!

Jealous? I know!

Well, 2009 has revitalized the chunky chain, but no worries, tartelettes! Keds are no longer required. Instead, you can count on some of the hautest names in the jewelry game- Michael Kors, Max&Chloe and Kenneth Jay Lane!

Still scared of the possibility of looking like a Naughty By Nature video extra? Mimi’s platform for chain to the rescue!

1. Allow the chain to be the showstopper of your look. Yes, Mimi, the queen of costume over-consumption is telling you to go with one statement piece!
2. Wear casual or dressy with the same joie de vivre! Jeans and a white tee? Rock it, don’t stop it! Tailored suit at the office? Hellllo, edgy workin’ girl!
3. Go chunky or go home! Shy away from extra ornamentation, so that your necklace can be funky, yet super versatile.
4. Never be afraid to mix metals. Gold&silver are the new PB&J. Just think of it as an awesome 2-for-1 during this tough economy.
5. Keep the retro influences to a minimum. No need for ‘90s chain, ‘80s bold shoulder and ‘70s platforms! We’re borrowing from the past, not dressing as a “Fashion Through the Years” museum exhibit.

All right, tartelettes, I think you’re ready to join the chain gang! Link up ;)

Table Toppers

I love to collect coffee table books that I can flip through time and time again & experience total sensory overload. With anything from fashion to photography these books are perfect room accents. Like all collectables, it’s always fun to gift others with one of your favorites. For your bestie’s next birthday, house warming party or even a thoughtful token of appreciation--choose a creative hardcover. These are some of my favorites along with newcomers that I can’t wait to get my claws on. I hope you find the perfect one for you!

For the Collector:
Andy Warhol Prints: A Catalogue Raisonne 1963-1987—with 384 pages and 1,700 reproductions from the man who IS pop art, this is the perfect colorful addition to any bookshelf.
Louis Vuitton: Art, Fashion and Architecture—a lavish montage of Vuitton’s collaborations with world renowned artists (trunks and bags aside).

For the Fashion Maven:
Who What Wear: Celebrity and Runway Style for Real Life—we were already addicted to the site, so the book is a given for any seasoned stylista.
The Teen Vogue Handbook—the go-to reference for all that is fashion, even beyond your teen years.

For the Visionary:
Hue by Kelly Wearstler—with projects arranged by color, Wearstler’s design inspiration proves much deeper than the walls she decorates.
Marchesa Casati: Portraits of a muse—the complete portrait of an everlasting style icon, including insightful contributions from the likes of DVF and Karl Lagerfeld.

Daytime Dare: On the Prowl

Ok, Tartelettes, the latest Daytime Dare should come as no surprise—leopard print. I set it up for you in last week’s lust list—and if you are even remotely familiar with moi, you know how nuts I go for print dell’animale. I’ve blogged it, coveted it and worn it. Now, it’s your turn to step inside the wild kingdom. I know it may seem non-sensical, but leopard print can be a wonderful neutral when done right.

And these are your rules for the game:
1. No more than two leopard pieces at once. No kind of “cat lady” is good.
2. Start with a conventional neutral base—black, white, brown—but make the print pop with a bold color. No time to be a ‘fraidy-cat.
3. Pace yourself. First time wrangling the cat? Go for gloves, a scarf or bag for just a touch of leopard fierce. Move on to a classic coat or sexy top when you feel more comfortable.
4. Most importantly, when you wear leopard print, strut your stuff like it’s nobody’s business. Those possibly dirty looks from coworkers in basic black and not-so-novel navy? Hateration Nation, honey. So what if you prefer your coffee with a side of cat, not cream ;)
So, follow Mimi’s leopard laws and unleash your inner chic kitten! Me-wow!

Amelia

Awesomely Autumn—tartelette’s Fall Lust List

Ok, Tartelettes, I’m just going to say it. I am absolutely obsessed with Fall. I literally lose my mind during the 9th, 10th and 11th months of the year. The way I see it, everything that’s right about the world happens during this time—football season, NY Fashion Week, boots and the birthdate of yours truly. (I know, I know—so humble)
Well, with my Misery-esque obsession completely out there, let’s get started on my Fall lust list. I know the Spring and Summer editions claimed to be the lust lists of the year, but lemme let you in on a little something—I just did that to make those lowly months feel better. Poor May, such sad July. Autumn is the only season that steals my heart time and time again.

Shakira “She-Wolf” With its sexy howl and 70s disco beat, the
title track from Shakira’s fourth English-speaking album has been playing in my head, heart and ipod non-stop since August. And have you seen Ms. “Hips Don’t Lie” in the video? I’ve been on the Shake-it-like-Shakira workout plan since. The album drops Oct 13, and I cannot wait to let this Chic-Wolf out of the closet.

KNEEd ‘Em, Want ‘Em, Gottahave ‘Em Yep, you guessed it, the next item on my lust list is
over-the-knee boots. You can barely walk down the street these days without hearing someone deliriously wishing, pining, longing for this Pretty Woman standard. Ok, so maybe only in my fashion fantasyland, but you get my point. Sexy thigh-high boots are everywhere—mags, runways and on the legs of the most stylish ladies. I’ve been coveting this Candela pair for months, but Saks and I are still in negotiations over that $500 price-tag. In the meantime, I’ll just pick up the more affordable, but equally chic “Vamp” style by Free People. And chicsters, these boots are made for much more than just walking.

Prps Leather Cape Jacket We all know I can be pretty melodramatic when it comes to the fashion thing, but this time I am as serious as the perfect black pump—this is some life-changing leather. From the drapey front to the high-cut back,
Prps cape jacket is simply phenomenal. I would die to pair it with a loose white tee and a haute pink mini for a good girl gone rocker bad look. And it is totally NYC-cool with jeans and a killer shoe. The price tag is steep, but just insert crazy fashion math to justify it—“If I wear it everyday and most night, that comes out to like 45 cents/wear...” Right?

Mini-Prowl Though I consider leopard print the new neutral, I know not everyone thinks like Mimi. (What is wrong with you people? Lol) For those style scaredy-cats, try a
leopard print scarf for just a touch of the trend. And though it may seem crazy, you can pair this piece with nearly anything—All black? I’m all in! Jewel tones? Jump in! Subtle prints? What a mixer! The scarf shown is by Tolani and will run you about a Benjamin. My style secret is street vendors. I picked up my kitty kat for $4 during a recent NYC trip. Ok, chicster, start your (mini) prowl.

Cinnamon-Spice and Everything Nice I’m an olfactory kinda gal, so scent is everything to me! While I love spice all year long, there’s just something about the crisp cool of Fall that makes me long for it even more. Whether by drink, candle or perfume, I gots to have that little zing. Some of my faves: Starbucks’ insanely addictive Pumpkin Spice Latte (it’s like Santa in September); Jo Malone candle in Pomegranate Noir; Marc Jacobs’ Lola which is bursting with zests of vanilla and musk.
Statement Eyes With nude lips hitting the beauty waves hard, its time to talk with our eyes. And tarte is the perfect place for achieving this eye-catching look. I didn’t know the importance of primer until I laid hands on tarte’s lifted which is packed with Firmitol™, the proprietary firming complex that helps tighten eyelids and the surrounding eye area.
Garance&Collette If you have never heard/seen of fabfash blogger Garance Dore, #$@!$$@%@? Sorry for the faux expletives, but this is serious sartorial sacrilege! Ms. Dore is the best thing to happen to the fashion world since Chanel…and gold costume jewelry…and Christian Loubotoin…and—ok, you understand. Well, this ToDieFor photog and webstar has collaborated with French retailer Colette for limited edition t-shirts emblazoned with Garance’s deliciously quirky illustrations. They’re not available online yet, but Ms. Dore promises they will be soon!

All right, tartelette's! Viva La Fall!

Amelia

Vintage Rose

When it comes to fashion, fall would definitely be my favorite season. I love the brisk weather, autumn leaves & the Manhattan fashionistas walking the streets in the latest collections. Typically, I reach for rich jewel tones, rustic browns and chunky/nubby knits. However, this year I’ve found myself drawn to a color you cannot find in my closet: pink! I’ve never been a huge fan of the shade, but all of a sudden I love dusty rose with peach undertones. I can't get enough of the romantic and vintage feel from the look seen above from Chloés fall 2009 collection. Even more enticing is the added edge from Vuitton (ditch the bunny ears!) I pulled ideas from both looks for an everyday look that is very much me—ultragirly waves, ruffles, sleek black ankle pants and natural hair & makeup. This entire look is from J.Crew (a minor retail addiction of mine). I even blogged about the black pixie pant a year ago-they’re still one of my staples!

So here’s how you’d get this look! For easy waves, use a 1” Hot Tools curling iron and roll hair backward away from the face. For amazing clean & natural makeup I use rest assured brightening wand (apply to brow bone & inner well of the eye) and three carats limited-edition cheek stain in shade brilliant as eyeshadow (it’s perfect)! I hope you enjoy this look as much as I do!

Step Up & Step Out Event!!

On Saturday, tarte teamed up with Ann Taylor to create a glamour lounge for Step Up Network’s annual designer shoe sale. Step Up Network is a national nonprofit agency for women looking to support underserved girls, while developing their own professional and social networks. Hosted by Vanessa Minnillo, this pop up boutique brought a woman’s love for shoes and New York’s fashion savvy together for a great cause. The tarte team was more then thrilled to participate and even created a look inspired by the new and modern Ann. We hope you love the day-to-night makeover & it empowers you to be a strong professional woman, too!

Walk the Line

Much like my racy mascara days, I have flirted, dated and nearly settled down with a whole slew of eyeliners. I thought I liked—even loved—these liners.

Oh, but how wrong I was.

Enter the smooth-talking—well, more like smooth-gliding—
emphasEYES. You don’t know swept off your feet until you’ve swiped on this eye-opening (hehe) wonder! With its tiny little tip, emphasEYES offers goof-proof application, which is essential for every tartelettes’ inner Steve Urkel. So it’s more “Hello, sexy!” and less “Did I do that?”

I love that the liner gives eyes a saturated, never heavy line that lasts all day long. And its small size allows for easy lining of the inner eye, which is critical to creating the perfect smoky eye. The lovely ladies at tarte offer emphasEYES in five different hues ranging from basic black to gorgeous green. So whether you get every hue or stick with the classics, you won’t be disappointed with this Cosmetics Casanova.

Daytime Dare— Feelin’ a Little Lacy

When most people hear the word lace, images of cheesy va-va-voom lingerie ala Fredericks of Hollywood or Great-granny’s turn of the century wedding gown come to mind. Well, tartelettes, Mimi is here to show you that the days of bad lace are over! For the past two or three years, the print has been making a quiet comeback, but for Fall 2009 its back in black, baby. And ready to play both nigh and day!Yep, you heard me- during the a.m. too!

For the Blair Waldorf in all of us, this Skinny Lace headband is simply adorable.

Anthropologie’s Skirted Lace-Print Cardigan is a versatile piece that would be just as stylish with tweed trousers on Mon as it would be with Converse on Sat.

NYFW Spring 2010—tarte for Hayden-Harnett!

New York Fashion Week is in full swing and the tartelettes are happy to grant you a ‘backstage pass’ to Hayden-Harnett’s “Lava Fields of Love” presentation! Inspired by a nomadic journey through lava fields and desert landscapes; the creative talents behind the Brooklyn label created a warm, natural feeling collection with hints of pop color. tarte’s artistry team used these concepts to create a flawless makeup look. Think: warm complexion with a strong, geometric brow and barely there lips. You can easily re-create the look for this fall, but be sure to avoid looking baked! Here’s a tip from lead tarte artist Laura McGuire, “…a bronzing powder with gold undertones (park ave princess) was used directly on the apples of the cheeks, and then our natural tipsy cheek stain was used on top for an extra healthy, warm glow.” Check out our fashion week collection page to snag some of the products used! http://www.tartecosmetics.com/tarte-shop-fashion-week-spring2010

Underneath it All

From the blogger who brought you Wholearth by Danny Seo (including a haute interview H.E.R.E.), I give you yet another organic beauty buy. As much as I love the natural goodness of tarte cosmetics, I would be plain evil to not dish on a line of top-notch, but affordable skincare products. Because no amount of ReCreate, lash hugger, emphasEYES and natural cheek stain can pretty super sickly skin. What’s “underneath it all” matters just as much.

And what is this organic wonder product? Why,
Desert Essence’s tea tree oil products! I discovered this 30-year-old brand while shopping (food-sample stealing) at Whole Foods, and on a whim bought the Facial Cleansing Pads. Though I had heard the joys of tea tree oil countless times before, it took these little rounds to make me a true believer. Soaked, but not saturated in the oil, these pads are a great post-cleanser companion that will have your face glowing with tea tree goodness. Be careful on your first use. Tea tree oil packs a powerful punch that may have your eyes watering—but in a “Ooo, these puppies are really working” way.

I loved my blemish-free lifestyle courtesy of the pads so much, that I ventured to Desert Essence’s
Thoroughly Clean Face Wash. From first splash, this cleanser left my face feeling like silk. Maybe that’s because of all the wonderful organic essential oils like extracts of Goldenseal, Hawaiian White Ginger (Awapuhi), and essential oil of Chamomile. Talk about a skin cocktail!

And I can’t wait to complete the natural skincare trifecta with the
Tea Tree Oil Skin Ointment, a renaissance cream that does everything from relieve razor burn to moisturize damaged cuticles.

But don’t just take my word about the skin-soothing savvy of Desert Essence. Here’s a testimony from a very content consumer.

"Your Tea Tree Oil has done on my face what 4 dermatologists and hundreds of dollars in treatments could not. Very grateful devotee of your product." – Irene

So, tartelettes, go on and do that organic shuffle that you know so well. Your skin will be so thankful!

Pretty Palette

Pretty is as pretty does.” Sorry Forrest, but there’s a new saying in town. What better way to compliment your favorite tarte product than with this gorgeous compact from Kenneth Jay Lane? The glittering coral and turquoise with dazzling “diamond” accents recall a time when nose-powdering was a sort of fashion-show.

“Check out the rubies on her compact. Wowza!”

“Pshaw! Silver is so 1948. Get with the 50’s darling.”

Well, make like Marilyn and pick up a pretty purse companion of your own. I can see tarte’s provocateur powder as the perfect pop-in for this chic compact. Just think of it as jewelry for your make-up ;)

Fall Trend Alert--GREEN!

I couldn’t be more excited because my favorite color is making its way into the limelight for fall: GREEN! I used to prefer more olive hues, but this season I’ll be walking the line of rich, earthy and forest versions. Everything from leather boots and fur-trimmed bombers to matte lacquered nails will be seeing green. During fall Fashion Week green was all over the runway and I particularly loved this fun punky 80’s-ish look from Louis Vuitton. Although, it’s a bit emerald I think it’s fabulous! If dressing green is a bit much for you all I can say is…incorporate with accessories! Try Rebecca Minkoff ‘clutch’, polish from OPI’S España collection or tarte’s infamous emphasEYES eyeliner. Go one step further and decorate the room with a Cire Trudon candle in odeur de lune (the scent of the moon). So as September rolls in and our tans fade, green proves a perfect match to our fair complexions—very enchanted forest.

My Vest Friend

It took three different styles of black vests to make me realize that I may(definitely) have an affinity(addiction) for this type of outerwear. Oversized knit? Yep, got it! Casual cotton? Why, of course. Boyfriend blazer-style? You know it! Well, lucky for me, I couldn’t be more in the know. From Beyonce to Fergie, Cameron D. and the reigning VestQueen Kim K., vests are getting more celebrity love than in the days of Mister T. With the vast number of vests, it’s hard for a gal to choose between cable-knit and leather, zippered and pocketed. But thankfully for you, there is Mimi!

Hello Mo-to: For that Harley Hautie look, choose a style with zesty zippers and lots’o’leather. The $58 mini moto style by
Dark Hearts at Urban Outfitters is short on price, but long on fab. I also adore the dusty grey vest by Charlotte Ronson with its weathered-chic look. But the style that has me humming Sinead’s “Nothing Compares to You” is Aqua’s Leather Racerback vest. Tough leather is tempered by feminine ruffles, while the cropped back is totally on trend. Talk about a vroom-vroom vest!

SweaterVest Style: The knit vest is one of my absolute favorite styles. Forget Carlton Banks-chic, this look is sophisticated and versatile. It’s long and cozy like a cardi, but sexy and sleeveless like a vest. I pair mine with a blouse and pencil skirt for work and throw it on with jeans and a tee for weekends. The
Side by Side vest from Rojas supplies Fall ‘09’s bold shoulder for a racier sweater style. I would up the ante with funky leggings and a statement shoe. I love Tory Burch’s Ramalagh sweater because it’s preppy with its big knit, but totally posh with its big gold buttons. This is an office-wear wonder paired with a shift dress and pumps.

What a Stud: If you don’t know that heavy-metal hardware is the hottest thing for Fall-WAKE UP, tartelettes! Why not kill two trends with one stone? In the words of Rachel Zoe, "I diiiieeee for LaRok." Therefore it’s no surprise that I am smitten with their
Gold Leaf vest. The studs are a little military for a cute cadet look, but the slim shape is all-woman. Talk about Sexy Soldier when paired with a black mini. Studs add a little more pizzazz to casual denim in this Current/Elliot style. Or try Quiksilver’s Beatnik vest for a more affordable jean option. Though I usually forbid the “denim sandwich” look, either vest channels Lady Moss when put with your favorite skinny jeans. Just stick to a different denim wash to create that Rock’n’Roll rather than Rockin’ in the 80s look.

Workin’ Girl: The office-friendly variety of vest is no longer part of the dreaded suit triplet. Ya know, the pants and the jacket and the itty-bitty vest all stuffed on one hanger. The modern work waistcoat is a different type of Bold&Beautiful, falling past the hip and with an exaggerated shoulder. Go all out Kim Kardashian by pairing a blazer-style vest with second-skin leggings and your sexiest shoe. For a more work-appropriate look, grab a silky blouse and a classic black pencil skirt. The
Cleon vest by Rodebjer is at first glance basic black, but with another look is fabulously funky. Double-breasted has never looked so good. Equally eye-catching is Charlotte Russe’s Tuxedo vest. This charcoal grey is an adorable alternative to black and its chic details make this an unbelievable steal at $27. Hurry and get one of these blazin’ styles so you can strut your stuff by the office watercooler.

Celebrating 40 Years!

This weekend marks the 40th birthday of Woodstock--3 long days of peace, love & music. In celebration of the 500,000 person exodus to Bethel Woods, NY channel your inner hippie. Here's a snapshot of a fashionista’s guide to how to pull off the Woodstock look of ’69. Meanwhile you can go all out--festivals are occuring cross country and I may even venture up to the original stomping ground. Rock on flower child!

Casual Musts!

The tissue tank, buttery leather bag & shooties…As Rachel Zoe likes to say, “I DIE”. Everything about this laid-back look says, ‘I didn’t even try’. Well, I know you did and still think you look pretty cool. This ‘indie-loving scenester’ attire is made up of casual basics that are just so perfect together. However, they can also be paired with other goodies in your closet—taking on a whole new chic get-up. Even better, you can get most of the pieces on the cheap and invest in the shoes & bag (and they aren’t even outrageously priced)! And, hey, those camel shoes perfectly transition into fall with black tights. We just love multi-use!

Daytime Dare — Hair Apparent

Listen up, Loose-wavesLinda! Hey there, SallyStraight-hair! You too, CurlyCathy! The time has come for you to accessorize your daily ‘do with more than shampoo and conditioner. Now, I’m not talking about going to Lady Gaga proportions. (I’m definitely not P-p-p-poker Faced about that dreadful purple beehive) I am just suggesting you consider a floral barrette, a sequined pin, a bow-bedecked handband—anything for a little head rush. Here are some gorgeous and grown-up styles that will have you looking more funky-fresh fashionista.

Her HatHighness Eugenia Kim has designed a diffusion line
EEK! exclusively for Urban Outfitters. But in addition to toppers, Kim is also offering some quirky hair accessories. Though it’s not exactly suited for a big meeting with the boss, this orchid and chain hair clip is a fun mix of hipster and chicster. I love how the purple pops, but the black version is equally elegant. How perfect for a lunch with the girls!

For hair jewelry that is understated but still über-adorable, no one does it like American prep mecca
J.Crew. Their headbands may have classic details like bows and rosettes, but they come in fun colors like acid yellow and haute pink for a look that is classic, but eye-catching. I am completely smitten with the “golden cluster” elastic. With its bold gold balls, it’s like a cocktail ring for your ponytail! And for the recessionista in all of us, J.Crew’s kiddie line Crewcuts has plenty of cute styles that could easily pass for adult accessories. Shhh…I won’t tell if you won’t!

I didn’t know a thing about
Cara Accessories until my big sis brought home a ToDieFor white studded headband from the line. It was girly, but edgy—declaring to the world that its wearer was a lady…but one who could kick your butt! Well, after meeting the Nicole Richie of headgear, I had to know more. I got to Googling and found more funky stylings, like the beautifully blingy “Diamante” headband. With its rows of tiny rhinestones, its less Lil Kim’s “Lady Marmalade” and more Marilyn Monroe’s “Diamonds are a girl’s best friend.”

Even if you’re not an avid GossipGirler like moi, you probably still know that Queen B’s (played by the chic and gorgeous Leighton Meester) signature style item is the headband. Well, the designer that keeps Ms. Waldorf diving head-first into fab is
Jennifer Ouellette. Ouellette, a celeb fave, has been at the top of the hair accessories class for a decade now, and her attention to detail shows in every piece. Barneys is the place for Ouellette’s playful, but ultra chic designs. How NYC chic!

For those chicsters who are already piling on the ponytail pizzazz,
Forever21 is the perfect place for the latest and cheapest trends. Don’t be fazed by their half-dozen pages of hair hotness. Just start clicking! They have a mind-boggingly good selection of headbands, pins and barrettes all for under six bucks. I can’t wait to snatch up this $5 “zipper flower” headband with its cute gold details and rocker-chic red hue. Casual Fridays just got amped up a few notches!

All right, tartelettes! Don’t leave your locks waiting- get to hair-cessorizing!

Amelia

The Weekender!

Breaking News, Tartelettes! Mimi_Style has come down with a very serious illness—the travel bug! Stop the giggling, this is a grave matter. All I can think about is packing up and flying off to some exotic locale. Last week ATL, next month Martha’s Vineyard! Okay, so maybe Atlanta, GA is not all that exotic, but you get my point. I have an insatiable need to get on the go.

But, jet-setting doesn’t come without a few road bumps. I mean, there is nothing worse than hopping off the plane, uber-excited to greet (insert chic city), and catching a glimpse of a grease-ball complexion. Hold the fries, please.

Well, thankfully for us, tarte has just the right palette to keep our eager little faces shining, not shiny! Tartelettes, I give you the t-zone travel palette, which gives “shine control on the go!” Like many tarte products, it is not only full of “skinvigorating ingredients,” but it also offers double-duty with its mini blotting sheets for quickjobs and a colorless powder that makes you matte for hours to come. And with its adorable passport-esque cover, it is the perfect travel pal! Bon voyage, chicsters!

Fly in July Lust List

My Darling Summer,
Why must you always speed by so quickly? I was just getting into the groove of bare skin and bright sun when BAM! Hello, July! So please slow motion for me so that I can enjoy the sweet kiss of your lazy lull for just a few moments more. And to show just how appreciative I am of your new more leisurely pace, I am compiling a Lust List so sartorially sinful that the other seasons will be envious all year long.

1. Mesi Jilly rings
As a little girl, I was team Belle all the way, never Ariel. I mean, I respected the mermaid’s dedication to the super-studly Prince Eric, but I just felt a connection with Belle that continues on today—the raven locks, the love of reading, and most of all being a magnet for the bad boy. But after discovering the ridiculously gorgeous rings by
Mesi Jilly at Amira in Miami’s Gansevoort Hotel, I was singing “Under the Sea” at the top of my lungs. These jewels are real-life buried treasure, combining the natural beauty of shell and coral with the glitzy addition of semi-precious stones and gold. And after seeing my style icon, the Ravishing Rachel Roy rocking Mesi Jilly, there was no turning back. Sebastian, can ya hear me?

2. Smoky Eye&Nude Lip
Nothing says naughty and nice quite like the combination of a devilishly dark smoky eye and a basically bare nude pout. Though you may be scared to tackle such conflicting sides of the cosmetics continuum, have no fear, tarte is here!
indelible wink is a two-for-one product with liquid liner on one end and the matching shadow, which sets the liner so it won’t budge or smudge all day long, on the other. I suggest black for all-out smoky seduction or the more subtle charcoal for a friendlier fire. As for your nude smacker, you must get the double-ended lipgloss in fred & ginger (how cute!). Fred is a rich caramel that gives your pout a natural gloss, while the golden Ginger brings the glitz and glamour.

3. July Jaunting
Whether you’re hitting the beaches of the South of France or the cultural cities of the Southeastern coast, get somewhere before summer comes to a screeching halt. With the endless number of “getyourcheapestflightwithus” websites, there is no excuse for being on self-imposed house arrest. I am beyond ecstatic to be jetsetting to Martha’s Vineyard at the end of August. I can’t wait to break out my seersucker and pastels for one last preppy party. Salty Dog Café, I’m coming for you! So get like me and make your vacation vows before school is no longer out for summer.

4. Peplum Skirts
This flouncy style harkens back to the days when I would put on my twirly skirt and bop to “I Wanna Dance With Somebody” till my 5-year-old body gave out. Well, fast-forward sixteen years and I still have a thing for the flirtiness of the twirl. But peplum is a more mature style that incorporates that adorable ruffle with the sleek sophistication of a slim skirt. Celeb stylistas like HP’s Emma Watson, the uber-chic Nicole Richie and her fierceness Fergie have been rocking this trend all summer long. FemmeFab designers Betsey Johnson and Tracey Reese have some totally ToDieFor looks. For the recessionally reasonable, Brit hotspot
Topshop has a wide range of fabulous dress and skirt styles. Talk about a plethora of peplum!

5. Torn by Ronny Kobo
If you don’t know about the sexy stylings of Israeli-born, Hong-Kong raised Ronny Kobo, get to Shopbopping, NatlJeanCo’in or something! I discovered Kobo’s line back in March and loved it so much, I not only
blogged, but also bought. There was something about the simple silhouettes, form-fitting fabrics and decadent designs that I just found irresistible. Well, the latest looks from Torn are just as tantalizing as Spring’s. I am obsessing over the One-shoulder Minidress in light heather grey because it is so subtly sexy. I’m thinking embellished flats for day and my haute pink pumps for night. I also L-O-V-E the Maryanne tank in leopard-print. The single-shoulder ruffle is such a funky take on the current trend. This top would work just as chicly paired with your slimmest jeans or under a structured blazer. Whichever style you gravitate towards, get Torn-up, Kobo-style!

Celebrity makeup artist Maria Maio gave actress Susie Essman the perfect look using her favorite tarte goodies for hidden camera TV show Make My Day. Since we’re huge fans of her hilarious, out-spoken character ‘Sussie’ in HBO’s Curb Your Enthusiasm, we’ll definitely be tuning in to her latest project! Get this glowing day look with the vanity available at QVC today. Kudos to Maria—we love it!

Fall 09 Trend Alert: Heavy Metal

Nodding our heads to Kiss, Van Halen & Metallica might not exactly be our thing, but channeling their heavy metal wardrobe this fall does seem about right! With fall 09 fashion beginning to hit the stores, keep your eyes peeled for some chic and fierce trends that mimic the style of these hard rock legends. Look out for deep rich hues, lots of leather & STUDDED EMBELLISHMENTS! This peak-shoulder Balmain number is amaaaazing— I only wish I could rock such a hot get-up! But translating haute runway to reality is definitely doable. I love these geometrical prints from Louis Vuitton, tarte and Cesare Paciotti. So this fall, are YOU ready to rock?

Daytime Dare: Rise and Shine

Step aside, Rob Pattinson! Move back, Stephen Moyer! There is a new Vampy Vixen in town and she goes by the name of Sequins! Now, I know what you’re thinking. “Where exactly is Miss Mimi_Style going with this?” But just let me introduce a little evidence.

1. Like the uber-undead, sequins appeal to the bold and daring. Sookie Stackhouse? Bella Swan? All shrinking violets should stick with the lowly mortals.

2. Sequins and vamps alike show sartorial sophistication in the inkiest of black. Talk about a fashion-forward fanger.

3. Most importantly, society has designated both the glitzy fabric and the aforementioned blood-suckers as creatures of the night.

Numbers 1 and 2, I can live with.

But numero tres? Beyond out-dated. Why must we continue to sequester our sequins during daylight hours? Like “True Blood’s” Bill Compton, sequins long for the warmth of human companionship.

That glittery tank that only gets seen “In Da Club” is begging to slip under a blazer and hit up the office. Tame down a sequined skirt with a classic cardi. I L-O-V-E
J.Crew’s wide variety of oversized boyfriend styles. And those shine-sexy short-shorts I mentioned in “Get Shorty” just need a basic tee to take them from naughty nighttime to daring for day.

So Tartelettes, take a chance and break out those sequins before dusk.

XO,
Amelia

One Fine Fragrance

I’ve never been a one-fragrance kind of gal. I often find myself skipping from scent-to-scent daily, weekly, even seasonally. Reaching for warmer/heavier notes in the winter and lighter/fresher summer scents—but always on the hunt for something new. That being said on my latest venture to Sephora I stopped dead in my tracks to sample TOCCA’s new eau de parfum—Giuletta. Their timeless scents have always been appealing, but this latest one had a nostalgia about it— something special that took me back in time. The scent is inspired by the love story of Italian director Federico Fellini and his wife, Giulietta Masina swooning over each other in the island of Corsica. I don’t know if it was the hint of vanilla orchid, love & romance, or the French Mediterranean but on all of those notes, I was sold!

Get Shorty!

Now, I’m no statistician, but I estimate that my legs comprise about 98.9752438% of my body. Before you start the eye-rolling and the “Boo-hoo, skinny girl!” scoffing, hear me out. Long-legged life really isn’t that great. Pants shopping often turns into a tribute show to my bony ankles. Certain shoes are designated to dress-duty exclusively. And I’ve recently discovered that on me, the maxidress is the new awkward prairie-length as even the longest frock creeps up over my feet. (SIGH!)
So, what is a lengthy-limbed gal to do? Get Shorty, of course! And with this season’s plethora of printed shorts, I am lamenting my long legs no more! From Tar-jay boutique (Target for you non “French” speakers) to shopbop.com, the options for chic short-shorts are endless.

Here are some of my top picks:

LaRok’s Diwali Shorts: I don’t know if it’s the intricate embroidery or the itsy-bitsy inseam, but I am completely OBSESSED with these shorts. They are Morocco in fabric form, ready to transport the wearer to a locale far more exotic than the USofA. Put ‘em with a plain white tank and frills-free flip-flops because these are some show-stopping shorts!

Walter’s Multi-Print Silk Short: With its intricate watercolor design, these beautiful bloomers are anything but casual. They are equally suited for a lunch with gal pals or a dinner date with Mr. Hottie. I daydream about them paired with a button down in basic black or a top with a pop of color.

sass&bide’s “A Girl Like Me” Shorts: As the name suggests, it takes a certain kind of gal to rock this sequined style. Therefore, the shy need not apply. With a hodgepodge color palette of white and metallics, these shorts can be matched with nearly anything for a funky downtown style. These “sass”-y shorts are the perfect uniform for a night of shakin’ that groove thang.

See by Chloe Jersey Striped Shorts: Anyone else totally over loungewear that screams “I’m a frickin’ awesome middle schooler! Like what’s up?” Ya know what I’m talking about- cheeky messages across the Rear End, glitter up one side and enough prints for a 3-ring circus act. Well, this See by Chloe pair is sophisticated sportswear. The white and navy stripes are subtly nautical, but very obviously summery. And the loose silhouette creates the allusion of a flouncy skirt so the look is polished and chic. Orange accents provide a fresher pop of color than the traditional red.

What better way to accessorize these short styles than with tarte’s leg bronzer
Glam Gams? It provides a pinch of shimmer, a delectable scent, but most importantly the perfect amount of faux-sun. So grab your shorts, “Glam” your gams and say “Hello, sunshine!”
